Carranza Road

  • Carranza Road is a rather long stretch of road (some paved, but mostly dirt) that passes by the Carranza Memorial. The memorial was erected in honor of Emilio Carranza who crashed his plane and died in that part of the woods on July 12, 1928. Also on this road are many camping areas and a youth correctional facility. There are countless off spurts of roads and trails leading back to old foundations and other interesting finds. There is also a street called Mooresmeadow Road which leads down to some interesting abandoned shacks. This road can be found on the left just as you enter Wharton State Forest on Carranza. If you are looking to do hours of exploring and find numerous, seemingly never-ending trails, this is the road to start out on! May I suggest you first make a quick stop into Nixen's General Store? It's right down the road before you enter Wharton. It's a cute little store with great sandwiches and glass bottled Cokes; the perfect place to pick up some off roading snacks. Lastly, make sure to take a moment at Carranza Memorial; it's worth making atleast a quick stop.
